A designer in Phoenix told me to stop using pure black text, and I argued with him for 20 minutes
So about 6 months ago this guy in Phoenix reviewed my portfolio over video call and said my dark text on light screens was too harsh on the eyes. I pushed back hard because pure black felt like the safe, standard choice for readable body copy. I finally tried swapping it to a dark gray like #1a1a1a and honestly my pages stopped looking like they were screaming at people. But now I see designers online split 50/50 on this, some say pure black is fine and the gray thing is just a trend. Is he right that pure black is basically never the move, or is this one of those rules people just repeat without thinking?

Plenty of great sites use straight black text and look perfectly fine, so this is not some universal rule.
