DAE have a paint guy in Reno who fixed my whole color picking mess with one question
So I do general contracting and I always picked colors by gut, tape a few swatches, squint, call it done. Then a job in Reno last fall went sideways. Homeowner wanted warm and inviting, I gave her beige, and she stared at it for a long second and said it felt like a dentist office. Her paint guy dropped by, older dude named Ray, and instead of pulling out a fan deck he asked where the house faced. South, I said. He told me that a south facing room eats light all day, so beige goes gray and flat, and he said the words I still think about. You do not pick a color, you pick what the light does to it. We moved her to a warm gold with a touch of red, same swatch family I would have skipped, and the room looked like the photo she had saved for two years. I had been treating color like a sticker instead of something that changes with the sun. So has anyone else learned a color rule from a tradesperson instead of a book? What did they say?
