Stopped eyeballing contrast and started checking it with a free tool, my buttons finally pass
I used to pick text colors by gut and it bit me hard last year on a booking form for a barber in Fresno. The gray I liked looked fine on my monitor, but when the barber pulled it up on his phone in his bright front window, the helper text under the fields was basically invisible. I finally installed a contrast checker plugin and started running every pair through it, and the difference was night and day (like flipping a light on in a dark garage). The tool doesn't make it pretty, it just tells you the ratio, and mine was sitting at 2.1 to 1 when it needed 4.5 for normal text. Now I fix the shade before I ever show anyone a mockup, and I've had zero complaints about readability in six projects since. Sure, it slows down the fun part, but guessing cost me a redo and a very patient barber. What ratio do you all aim for on body text, do you stick to the 4.5 or push higher?
