Unpopular opinion: stop using red and green status dots, I lost 3 hours debugging a dashboard because of them
Last Tuesday I was looking at a server monitoring dashboard for our team and saw a row of little dots, so I assumed green meant everything was fine and moved on. Turns out the dots were red for down and I could not tell the difference, so a service had been dead for almost 2 hours before someone else caught it. It took me another 3 hours to figure out why the alert never felt urgent to me, and it was just the color choice, nothing else. Now I keep telling our devs to add icons or text labels next to every status and they act like I am being dramatic. Does your team's dashboard use color alone for pass or fail, and has it ever bit you?
