Rant: my comic shop guy says Venom is 'basically a Spider-Man villain' and I keep having to explain why that bugs me
Went into my local shop in Portland last week and the owner told a new reader that Venom is just a Spider-Man bad guy, full stop. Here is the thing, the symbiote has spent way more page time as its own character since the 90s, with like 30 years of solo runs where Spidey barely shows up. Saying Venom is only a Spider-Man villain is like saying Wolverine is only an X-Men guy, technically kind of true but you skip all the good stuff. New guy walked out with Lethal Protector instead of a Spidey book and honestly I think that was the right call. Does anyone else get weird about how shops explain character history to new readers?
