Blank screen at 80 feet: Why I swear by dive tables

During a deep inspection dive, my dive computer suddenly died on me. Most guys in the trade push for all the latest gear, but I've found that keeping up with manual dive plans is a real lifesaver. How many of you still make time to practice with tables instead of just trusting the gadgets?

Had my computer fail at 100 feet, my paper tables got me back up safe.

That backup sheet saved me at 60 feet last month too.

Remember my buddy's dive in Cozumel. His computer screen went black at 80 feet. Just died. He stayed calm, pulled out his backup slate with the tables. Followed it up slow and steady. Said it was the longest ascent of his life but it worked. Never dives without that plastic card now.
