I was cleaning my dive knife wrong for years and it almost cost me a job

For the longest time, I'd just rinse my knife with fresh water after a job and call it good. Last month on a bridge inspection in Mobile, my main blade wouldn't lock open when I needed to cut a tangled line. The salt had built up inside the pivot, even though the outside looked fine. My tender had to drop a spare down, which wasted about 15 minutes and got the supervisor watching me. The guy running the job later said he's seen knives fail from that exact thing, and he won't hire divers who don't take care of their gear. Now I take the whole thing apart every couple weeks and scrub the pivot with a toothbrush and vinegar. How often do you guys actually break down and clean your knives?

What's your knife made of, steel or titanium?

Remember my grandpa's old pocket knife. He used it for everything from cutting twine to cleaning his nails. The blade was so worn down it was almost round. He'd just wipe it on his pants and call it good. Makes you think about how much we overcomplicate things now. That knife was just a simple piece of steel and it lasted a lifetime.

Just rinse mine. Never had an issue.
