Question about wiping hard drives after every repair job
I keep going back and forth on this with other techs. One side says we should always wipe drives to prevent any data from being seen by others. The other side argues it adds extra steps and can annoy people if their files are gone. For example, if I just fix a broken screen, does the drive need to be cleared? I heard stories where old data caused issues later. But some folks get mad if they lose their photos. How do you handle this in your shop?

Totally get the struggle. Had a guy freak out last month because we wiped his drive after a simple fan replacement. Now I always ask first unless it's a clear security risk.

Man, that's such a common thing these days... people just assuming they know what's best for you without asking. It happens with everything, not just tech stuff. Like a family member tossing out your "junk" or a friend making plans for the whole group. They mean well, but it just feels like your own choices don't matter. Good on you for changing your approach, because that little bit of respect goes a long way. It's wild how often the fix is simple but the feeling of being ignored isn't.
