I bolted my first container corner casting to the frame with the door still on, and that was my wake up call
So last month I was framing out the end wall of a 20 foot container in my backyard here in Tucson, and I had already welded the corner castings down to the new steel base. Felt good about it too, until my neighbor who used to do bridge work walked over and asked why I wasn't squaring off the diagonals first. I said the container already sits square from the factory, right? He just laughed and handed me a tape measure. Turns out the container had settled almost 3/4 of an inch out of square on the long side after sitting on gravel for two winters before I ever cut the door opening. That little bit of twist meant my whole end frame was off, and I only caught it after I'd cut and welded everything. I ended up grinding out the plate welds and redoing the base with diagonal bracing tacked in first, which cost me a full weekend and about $340 in replacement steel. The real kicker is I had a level and a square sitting right there the whole time. Now I check diagonals on every panel before anything gets welded permanent. Anyone else get burned by trusting factory square on a used can?
