Designers always skip the part where variable fonts let you fix optical stuff at small sizes. An icon that looks crisp at 64px usually turns to mush at 16px because the strokes are too thin. A variable version could bump weight or adjust stroke contrast based on size instead of shipping separate files. That's the whole point of the format and the font nerd probably never mentioned it.
