Still don't get the obsession with pure CSS landscapes

Saw a post yesterday with 400 upvotes for a sunset made of 50 layered gradients. It looked nice, sure, but I've been doing CSS art for 2 years and I think people skip over the small stuff. My favorite piece is a broken coffee mug that took 3 evenings, just a few divs and some border tricks. Nobody upvoted it. Is the wow factor just about scale now, or do people actually care about clever little details anymore?
