Two columns for everything was my habit until I tried an asymmetric layout
I used to set every card grid to repeat(2, 1fr) without thinking. Looked clean, easy to manage. Then last month I was building a recipe site for my sister's bakery in Portland and she kept saying the cards felt too "boxy." I fought it for a day, then tried a 2fr 1fr split on the featured item and suddenly the whole page had some rhythm. Now I only do equal columns for small utility sections. Has anyone else found that uneven tracks make a layout feel less like a spreadsheet?

A 2fr 1fr split usually gets read as "this one matters more," and that's the part people miss when they ask why uneven grids feel different. Equal columns tell your eye every card is the same weight, so the page reads like a list, but one wide track gives the eye a place to land first and everything after it feels picked instead of sorted. It only works if the wide card earns it though, so slap a boring filler card in that spot and the whole thing just looks lopsided for no reason.
