A print shop guy in Cleveland made me rethink my whole color matching approach

Last Tuesday I was picking up a rush job at this small print shop, and the owner came out to look at a proof I was complaining about. He said my file had too many rich blacks stacked and it would come out muddy on their press. I argued for a minute because my monitor looked fine. He pulled up my file and showed me the CMYK values, said to swap the black to a flat 60% and boost the magenta a touch. I tried it on a test strip right there and the difference was night and day. All my years of eyeballing colors on screen and I never once asked the actual printer what they needed. Has anyone else had a production person point out something basic that changed how you prep files forever?
