Spent $300 on a fancy Pantone book and I'm still confused

I bought the Pantone Formula Guide in Nashville last month thinking it'd fix all my color matching issues with clients. Turns out the coated and uncoated versions look totally different on my 8-year-old monitor anyway. $300 later and I'm still guessing which blue is actually blue. Anyone else feel ripped off by color standardization tools?

My monitor calibration totally changed the game for me. I dropped some cash on a SpyderX last year after fighting with Pantone books for months. Turns out my screen was showing everything way too warm, so what I thought was blue was actually more purple-gray. The books are still useful for picking colors in person but they're useless if your monitor isn't telling the truth. Calibrating fixed about 80% of my matching headaches, then I just learned to check colors under different lighting too. Honestly the books aren't a scam, you just need the right setup to make them work.

Yeah calibrating first then using the books is the real trick.
