Why does nobody talk about how badly matte laminate shows every greasy fingerprint
I run a small print shop out of my garage here in Tucson and last month I had a client order 250 business cards for his food truck with matte laminate on both sides. Looked amazing right off the cutter, soft feel, no glare, he loved them. Then he came back two days later with a stack that looked like everyone at the truck had been eating fried chicken with their bare hands. Every single card had these shiny smudges all over the front and no amount of wiping got them off, it just smeared them around. I had been pushing matte finish on clients for like two years because I thought it looked more upscale than gloss. Turns out the texture that makes it feel nice is basically a fingerprint magnet and it holds oil way worse than gloss ever did. I ended up reprinting the whole run in gloss at my own cost, about $180 in paper and laminate down the drain. Any of you switched finishes after a job went sideways like this, or do you just warn people up front and let them pick?
