Hot take: stop letting tile guys butt joint the corners, I just tore out a 2 year old shower in Denver because of it
My neighbor's shower failed after 2 years and when we pulled the tile every inside corner had a hairline crack running up it. The installer skipped the backer rod and silicone, just pushed tile tight together and grouted it, and grout doesn't flex so it split. Caulk those corners folks, its 30 minutes of work that saves you a full tear out. Anyone else seeing this on newer builds around Denver or is it just my street?
I saw a post from a tile guy in Texas saying he's ripped out three showers this year alone for the exact same reason, corners just butted tight with grout and no silicone anywhere. Grout is basically cement, it has zero give, so when the house shifts even a tiny bit those corners crack and water goes straight behind the wall. Backer rod and caulk takes half an hour and costs like ten bucks, skipping it is just lazy.
