Honestly I still eyeball most paint colors. My living room is a gray I picked by holding a chip to the wall in the store. It looks perfect. The whole sample pot system feels like a marketing trick to make you spend more money. A bad batch sounds like a fluke, not a reason to change your whole process. I trust my own eyes over a tiny square of color any day.
