Caught myself arranging icons by alphabetical order for 3 years

I was building a mobile menu for a local bakery last week and a buddy glanced over and asked why my icon set was sorted by name instead of function. It clicked that I'd been making users hunt for the settings gear between the gallery and gift icons the whole time. Has anyone else realized they were overcomplicating a basic layout choice?

I've definitely been the guy who alphabetized his apps on his phone and then couldn't find Spotify for 20 seconds because it was sandwiched under "subway surfers" or something. Alphabetical order is like the default brain setting for people who think organizing things means sorting them by letter, not by what actually makes sense to a human being using the thing. It's like arranging a kitchen by alphabetical order instead of putting the forks near the plates. Your users were probably silently judging you while they tapped around like confused old people at a buffet.

Is it like how stores put milk in the back, making you walk past everything else?
