My mentor said to sketch in pen so I couldn't erase, and I hated it for 3 weeks
He swore pencil lines let you chicken out of bold shapes, so I switched to a cheap ballpoint for my morning coffee doodles. Now I think the real fix was just drawing on a 4x6 index card instead of a full page. Anybody else sketch small to force better decisions?
Totally agree on the small paper thing. Been doodling on sticky notes at my desk for years and it changes everything, because a tiny page makes every line feel like it matters. Back when I used a big sketchbook I'd spend half the time just filling space with filler, and the good stuff got buried. Pen helped me too but honestly the size did more work than the ink did. There's something about knowing you only have 4 inches to work with that shuts up the part of your brain that wants to fiddle. Cheap ballpoint on a small card is maybe the best combo I've found for daily practice. Works for me anyway, you might hate it.
