Client asked me why I used 3 different blues and it made me stop and actually think

Had a zoom call with a guy making a small bakery site and he said 'why is the header blue, the button blue, and the background blue but they're all different blues?' I had no answer. I just picked them because they 'felt right'. Has anyone else had a client call out something super basic that made you realize you were just guessing?

Did the client even know what they wanted instead, or were they just throwing the question at you to seem smart? I had a guy once ask why my logo was a circle and not a square, and I just told him circles look friendlier.

@miller.susan I had a similar moment last year with a coffee shop logo. The owner asked why I used a rounded font instead of a sharp one and I had no real answer beyond "it looks better." So I started keeping a little design journal on my phone where I write down why I pick certain colors or fonts for each project. Now when a client asks something like that I can pull up my notes and explain that the darker blue is for headers because it draws the eye and the lighter blue is for buttons because it contrasts better with white text. It makes me feel less like I am guessing and more like I actually have a plan. Plus it shuts down the "why" questions before they turn into arguments haha.
