TIL an old trucker taught me how to read injector spray patterns by sound alone

Back in 2008 at a Flying J in Ohio, this grizzled driver heard my Detroit 60 series knocking and said "that number 4 injector is dripping, not spraying." Popped the valve cover and sure enough he was right. Has anyone else picked up weird diagnostic tricks from truckers or old timers?

Old timers like that are a dying breed for sure. If you ever hear a sharp metallic tick on a warm engine, check your injector hold-down bolts before you start chasing fuel issues. That loose sound can be misinterpreted as a stuck valve or lifter, but it usually just needs a torque wrench adjustment.
