My neighbor told me to paint my house a dark color and I'm glad I listened
He said dark colors hide dirt better and make the trim pop, which sounded wrong to me. I was worried it would look too heavy on my small bungalow in Austin. I went with a deep charcoal gray last spring and it's been a year now. The house looks cleaner for longer and the white windows really stand out. Has anyone else tried a dark exterior and been surprised by the results?

Funny how that works, right? Everyone warns you about dark paint fading in the sun, but they never mention the heat factor. I’m in Phoenix, and my dark sage green house actually stays cooler than my old beige one did. The paint has some new reflective stuff in it. The big shock for me was how it made my yard look greener and more lush by contrast.

That "made my yard look greener" part is so true... my last house was a sad beige box that made everything look dusty. I went with a dark blue once and my sad little shrubs suddenly looked like a real garden. Guess I should have worried less about the color and more about the paint itself.
