Tried making a dress from old canvas drop cloths and it actually worked

I had a bunch of leftover heavy canvas from a job last year and figured I'd try to make a workwear style dress. I washed it three times to soften it up, then cut a simple shift pattern. The real surprise was the color, it faded to this soft gray that looks way more expensive than free material. Has anyone else tried using construction stuff for clothes? I'm thinking about trying denim from tarps next.

That faded soft gray sounds amazing. Did you use any special detergent to get that color, or was it just from the washing? I'm always looking for ways to get that worn-in look.
