Just found out the standard kitchen counter depth is a lie
I was redoing my sister's kitchen in Tacoma and we ordered a new countertop. The spec sheet said 25 inches deep, standard. When it showed up, it was 24.5. I called the fabricator ready to fight, and he calmly told me that's normal. The 'standard' 25 inches includes a 1.5 inch overhang at the front, so the actual cabinet box top is only 23.5 inches, and they add an inch for the backsplash lip. My mind was blown. I've been in this business for a decade and always worked off the 25 inch number for planning. It explains why some appliances felt too tight. I found this out the hard way when our new fridge almost didn't fit. Has anyone else run into this and had to adjust their cabinet plans last minute?
