inI finally get why high contrast isn't always better
My uncle who works in printing told me years ago that pure black on pure white is actually harder for the human eye to process than a slightly off white background with a dark gray text. He said something about how the eye has to work overtime trying to focus because the contrast is too extreme or something like that. I remember being shocked because every website and document I'd ever seen used that exact combo. Now I always mess around with my background colors and text shades just to see what feels easier to read for longer periods.

inShoutout to the 'no-spend weekend' challenge I tried in April
Yeah the date checking tip is solid, I almost made a soup with old beans last week until I caught the date.

inI was reading an old building code book and found a rule about door swing that seems designed to fail
Your buddy's story is funny but the timing's a bit off. Those rules about door swings come from the 1950s, not the 70s, before anyone really thought about hallway traffic patterns. The original code just said doors had to open a certain way and nobody bothered to check if it actually worked in real buildings. I've seen apartments where you have to hug the wall just to get past a neighbor's door. It's like the code writers lived in houses all their lives and never imagined two doors could face each other.

inMy weekend spreadsheeting went sideways and I actually fixed it
Oh man, actually Excel's auto-save is usually set to 10 minutes by default. You gotta dig into File > Options > Save to switch it down to 5. It's a tiny change but makes a huge difference when you're deep in a spreadsheet.
