PSA: Killed a motherboard by not double-checking standoff placement

Missed it by a mile." Yeah, I know that feeling. I once reassembled a phone and somehow got a tiny piece of my shirt fabric caught in the screen connector. The whole display flickered like a bad horror movie. Took me an hour of staring at it before I realized I had basically dressed it in a tiny shirt. $90 is rough though, at least you got to learn something and curse the universe at the same time.

Tried a lighter touch with my scale and got a better surface finish

Not sure if it's that deep. A fencing post hole digger isn't some precision tool where you need a light touch, you just gotta get the damn thing in the ground. But I guess if we're talking about something like a table saw or a lathe, sure, forcing it will get you hurt. @theabennett the bar analogy works for customer service, but for most manual labor just brute force and repetition gets the job done.

PSA: We switched from a flat monthly retainer to a project-based fee for a big client in Tampa...

Used to push retainers hard for the steady cash flow, but we had a client like that too. They'd call every week with "tiny" changes that blew up our schedule. Switched them to a fixed project fee for a new brand guide, and suddenly everyone could breathe. We stopped watching the clock, and they stopped asking if a new font was going to cost extra. What kind of projects do you find this works best for?
