Had a customer ask me to wire his alarm panel into his fishtank light timer

Guy out in Maplewood was dead serious, said he wanted his motion sensors to only arm after his tetras went to bed. Told him I'd need a permit for that kind of genius, and he just blinked at me like I was the crazy one.

My artist friend convinced me the 60-30-10 rule is overrated

I was talking to my painter friend Mark last week at his studio in Austin. He said the 60-30-10 breakdown for main, secondary, and accent colors works fine for boring rooms but kills any chance of visual tension. He showed me a mural he did with 40% of two colors fighting each other and 20% a third, and it looked way more alive than anything I've designed using that rigid split. Has anyone else tried throwing out the classic ratios and just going by gut?

That Tuesday last year when ChatGPT crashed right before a client demo

I had this big presentation for a local tech meetup in Denver about using AI for small business scheduling, and the whole system went down 10 minutes before I started. Had to wing it with just my notes and a whiteboard, which honestly got way more engagement than any slide deck ever did. Anybody else have a failure that turned out better than the original plan?

I hit 200 hours on a single show and it kinda scared me

I was checking my streaming stats last night and saw I had watched 200 hours of the same show over the last 8 months. That's like 8 full days of my life just sitting there watching one series. I started it in January just to have background noise while I cleaned, but then I got hooked on the character arcs and kept going. Now I'm wondering if I should finish the last season or take a break. Has anyone else hit a crazy hour count on a show and had to step back?

Rant: My kitchen remodel hit a wall 3 days in and I had to figure it out real quick

Was doing a small cabinet refresh in my apartment here in Denver last weekend. Thought it would be a simple paint job and new handles. Day 3 I go to mount the first door and realize the hinge screws are stripping out the old holes. Like every single one. Junk wood or something. Stood there staring at it for 10 minutes feeling like an idiot. Ended up drilling out the holes and jamming in some wooden dowels with wood glue. Cut them flush and let them dry overnight. Next day the screws held perfect. Door hangs straight now. Has anyone else run into old cabinets that just fall apart when you try to fix them?

A cashier called me out at a gas station last Tuesday because my receipt design was confusing

I was buying snacks in Dallas and the cashier stopped me. She said my receipt had red text on a green background that she couldn't read. I designed that receipt myself for a small shop I run. Turns out about 1 in 12 men have some type of color blindness. Now I always check my designs with a free colorblind simulator online. Has anyone else found a good tool for testing color contrast quickly?

My grandpa told me back in 2018 that large dropdown menus on mobile were lazy design, and now I finally get why after struggling to pick a flight time on my phone at 2 AM.

He was a retired web designer from Chicago and after fighting that stupid dropdown for 10 minutes I remembered his exact words, has anyone else had an older relative predict a UX trend before it became obvious?

Overheard my neighbor say she stopped watching shows with too many seasons

I was watering my plants last week and heard my neighbor tell her friend she won't start any series that has more than 3 seasons. She said she's tired of committing to something that drags on forever. It got me thinking about how many great shows I skipped because they had 7 or 8 seasons. But on the flip side, some of my favorite shows took a few seasons to really find their groove. Does anyone else find themselves avoiding longer series now?

Finally tried that app with no onboarding tutorial. Hated it at first.

I was dead set against using that new filing app at work. No instructions, no hand holding. Just a blank screen. After 3 days of fumbling in San Francisco I finally got it. Now I actually prefer it. The freedom to learn by doing is better than clicking through 50 popups. Anyone else find less guidance actually works better for complex tools?
