The messy back office at a 3 person agency in Boise made me rethink how we bill
I was out in Boise two weeks ago visiting a client and they walked me through their office, and their whole billing setup was a whiteboard with client names in dry erase marker plus a stack of sticky notes for anything that wasn't a flat monthly retainer. I asked how they tracked scope creep and the owner laughed and pointed at the whiteboard where someone had written 'add 6 hrs, call Dave' in red. Here's the thing though, they were pulling in about $42k a month with 3 people and they knew every client's hours by heart because nothing was buried in a dashboard nobody reads. Meanwhile our shop has a full project management stack and I still couldn't tell you off the top of my head which accounts are bleeding hours. Maybe it's just me but I think we hide behind tools instead of actually knowing our numbers. How many of you actually know your hours per client without opening a report?
