Fired a $3,500/mo retainer guy in March and I still feel weird about it
I used to believe you never walk away from steady money, no matter how bad the fit is. Then in March I was sitting in my truck outside a Starbucks in Tulsa after a call with a retainer client who had screamed at my project lead for 20 minutes over a missed deadline that was his own fault. I went home, wrote the breakup email that night, and lost 30% of my monthly revenue in one click. Two months later we backfilled him with two smaller clients who actually say thank you, and my team stopped dreading Mondays. Has anyone else cut a big chunk of revenue and had it turn out fine, or did I just get lucky?
