That guy who keeps calling SEO 'just keywords' finally broke me today
Was at a networking event downtown and this accountant keeps telling me his cousin can do my job for cheap because 'it's just picking the right words.' I asked him how many times he's ranked a page for a competitive term and he just stared at me. I pulled up my phone and showed him our latest report where we moved a client from page 6 to page 2 for a 4-word phrase with 12k monthly searches. He changed the subject to taxes. Has anyone else had to explain that SEO involves technical setup, link building, and content strategy to people who think it's a crossword puzzle?

The 'just picking the right words' bit is what always gets me too. I started bringing a simple way-too-basic example to these convos, like telling them SEO is more like building a store in a mall than just putting a sign up. It usually shuts down the backseat driving pretty fast.

Yeah the 'picking the right words' thing gets me every time. My buddy runs a small bakery and her nephew offered to 'do SEO' for free because he 'took a class,' and then he just guessed at keywords with zero research and their traffic actually dropped.
