Watched my biggest account walk out the door over one email in 2018, and I still think about it when I onboard new people
Back in 2018 we had a client in Sacramento that made up about 30 percent of our revenue, and I got way too comfortable with them. One Friday afternoon their marketing lead sent over a request to change some ad copy, and I kicked it to a junior person and told her to just push it live, no review. Well, she swapped the words and the whole thing went out with their competitor's name in the headline. Nobody caught it until Monday morning when the client forwarded us screenshots of their own customers roasting them online. They pulled the whole contract that week, and I had to lay off two people that month, which still eats at me. What I did after that was simple: any copy change to a live account had to pass through a second set of eyes, even if it was just one line. It slowed things down maybe 20 minutes a day, and honestly that felt like nothing compared to losing that account. Has anyone else had a tiny mistake blow up way bigger than it should have, and did you change your whole process because of it?
