My sister's 10 minute rule for fries ruined my chicken

She swore flipping fries halfway through makes them perfect. I tried that on my drumsticks. 5 minutes in, opened the basket, tongs slipped, hot oil splash on my arm. Burned like crazy but the chicken was actually fine. Fries were soggy. She still claims the rule works. Anyone else get burned following family advice?

Wait, did she actually warn you about the oil splashing when you flip stuff, or was she just talking about the timing? Because that's a big thing to leave out when you're telling someone to flip their food mid fry. The whole point of a rule like that should include the basic safety part, otherwise it's just half advice. Also, why were you using tongs on drumsticks anyway? I've always used a spider strainer or a fork for that, tongs just push the oil around and give it a chance to jump at you. Soggy fries sound like a separate issue too, maybe your oil wasn't hot enough when you put them in. But really, did she at least admit the burn was on her, or is she doubling down that you did it wrong?
