A lead mechanic handed me back my torque wrench in 2009 and said one sentence I still hear
Back when I was new on the line at a hangar in Wichita, I used to just click the wrench and call it good. A lead named Ray stopped me after a flap track bolt, handed the wrench back, and said "zero it every single time or you're guessing, not torquing." Turns out I'd been carrying a little preload for who knows how long across a whole tail job, and we had to redo about 14 fasteners. Now I break it down to zero before every use and log the setting in my pocket book like he did. Cheap lesson, but it stuck harder than any sign-off in the books. What did an old timer tell you that you fought at first?
Wait, you had to redo FOURTEEN fasteners because of preload? That is wild. I would've figured a click is a click, but the whole tail job being off because the wrench was carrying a set from a previous use is something I never even thought about. Makes you wonder how many jobs out there got signed off with a wrench that was never zeroed in the first place.
