Hot take: The new digital torque wrenches are ruining young mechanics
I've been turning wrenches at a regional maintenance shop in Phoenix for 12 years. Three years ago we switched from manual click-type torque wrenches to digital ones for all wheel and brake work. The new guys trust the digital readout so much they never feel the bolt stretch or hear the joint compress like we used to. Last month I had a kid over-torque a main wheel nut because he ignored the warning beep and just watched the screen spin up. Is it worth the speed and precision, or are we losing the tactile feel that catches problems before they happen?
