TIL the torque spec on a Lycoming cylinder base nut changes if you use oil instead of thread lube
I was doing a top overhaul on an O-360 in my hangar in Wichita and grabbed the Lycoming overhaul manual just to double check the base nut torque, and there it was in a footnote, 50 ft-lbs dry but only 30 ft-lbs if the threads are oiled. I had been using the same number for both setups for who knows how long, and it finally clicked why I kept seeing that slight crush on the through bolts. Does anybody here actually swap numbers depending on lube, or do you just pick one and stick with it?
