Burned $900 on a drone shoot that got scrapped over one storm cloud

Rented a Phantom for a full day in Scottsdale last month to capture some resort B-roll, paid the operator $900 upfront, and the whole thing got canned when a dust storm rolled in from nowhere. The contract had a weather clause but I skimmed it and lost the deposit. Anyone else get stuck paying for a shoot that never happened in monsoon season?

Found out contrast ratios change with font weight, not just size

I was messing with a dashboard for a client and ran the same color through a checker at 400 weight and 700 weight. The bold version passed at 4.6:1 but the regular failed at 4.1:1. Never realized bold text effectively counts as larger for WCAG purposes, stumbled on that in the official docs last week. Has anyone else built a palette around thin fonts and gotten burned?

Snowy roof collapse taught me to check for hidden flue damage

Last January in Buffalo I swept a chimney after a heavy snow and the whole crown gave way, dumping bricks and ice into the living room below. I patched it with a quick metal sleeve to get heat back on, but has anyone else had a structure fail like that after a thaw and what did you do about the insurance side?

My mixing bowl cracked mid-color and I had to improvise fast

Last Tuesday I was doing a full highlight and my glass mixing bowl just split right down the middle after I tapped it a little harder than usual. The color was already mixed so I had to scoop it into a plastic cup with a spatula before it got everywhere. I finished the appointment but my hands were shaking the whole time and I know the consistency was off on a few foils. Has anyone else had a tool fail like that in the middle of a service and how did you handle it without losing your cool?

I finally ditched the 12-column grid for a 6-column one

Last week I redesigned a small event flyer for a friend's band in Nashville, and everyone online swears by 12-column grids for flexibility. But I kept staring at my layout and it felt scattered, like the text and images were just floating with no anchor. So I switched to a 6-column grid instead, and suddenly every element had a clear place, with bigger gaps that made the whole thing breathe. It took about 4 hours of reworking blocks, but the final poster looked way stronger than anything I made with 12. I know the advice is always 'more columns means more control,' but for a simple one-page design, fewer columns gave me fewer choices, which honestly helped me commit faster. Has anyone else tried stepping down a grid size when the standard felt overwhelming, or am I the only one who finds less structure easier to work with at first?

Spent 3 years digging test pits wrong until a retired guy pointed it out

I was on a field school back in 2019 and this old timer walks over, watches me for like 5 minutes. He says "son, you're scraping away the fill before you even look at the stratigraphy." I had been just digging down without paying attention to soil layers. Total facepalm moment. Anyone else have a basic skill they messed up for years before someone corrected them?

Client told me my hover effects were 'too aggressive' and I was mad until I saw it

I was proud of this big red button that shook and grew 50% on hover for a small business site. The client said it felt like the page was yelling at them, haha. After I toned it down to just a subtle color shift and a 2px shadow, she said it actually felt professional. Anyone else get feedback that made you realize you were overdoing the animations?

I still see people using brick patterns that don't account for the mortar joint thickness

Was walking through a new subdivision near Austin last weekend and counted 3 houses where the brick patterns were off because they used a standard 7.5 inch brick but forgot to add the 3/8 inch mortar joint into their layout. My dad ran a masonry crew for 30 years and drilled this into me back when I was 16 stacking brick on job sites. Anyone else notice builders skipping this basic step?
