Can we talk about how a $40 tone probe finally got me to drop my 20 year habit of yelling up the ladder?
For close to two decades I ran every rough-in the same way. One guy stays at the panel, the other one is up in the attic at the box, and we just yell back and forth. Half the time the guy up top can't hear a word over the AC running and we burn 15 minutes waving flashlights at each other. Last month my helper got sick and I had to do a 22 drop house in Franklin by myself, so I grabbed a cheap tone probe and generator combo off the truck for about 40 bucks. I clipped the generator on the wire at the panel, walked upstairs, and found every single cable on the first try without touching a ladder twice. I finished that rough-in in 5 hours instead of the 9 it took me on the same floor plan back in March. I always figured tone gear was for the structured cabling guys and data nerds, not for us. Now I want to know what else I've been doing the hard way out of pure stubbornness. Anybody got a cheap tool under 50 bucks that made them feel dumb for waiting so long?
