My buddy swore I should skip the filler episodes on a 200 episode shonen, and he was dead wrong
He told me at a cookout in June to just jump to the canon arcs and save myself 40 hours, so I did, and the big emotional payoff in the final fight landed flat because I never knew half the side characters. Went back and watched all of it over 3 weeks and the whole thing hit completely different. Has anyone else had a show ruined by skipping around, or does it actually work for you?
The "emotional payoff landed flat" part is exactly it. You can't just skip to the big moments because those moments only work if you put in the time with the characters first. It's like reading the last page of a book and wondering why you didn't cry. The boring episodes are doing quiet work the whole time, building up your gut feelings about these people so that when the big stuff happens you actually care. Your friend probably thinks he's saving you time but he's really just robbing you of the part that makes it all worth it.
The "boring episodes are doing quiet work" point is solid, but I don't fully buy it. Some shows really do have filler that adds nothing, and skipping it saves you from quitting the show out of boredom. The trick is knowing which shows need the slow build and which ones are just wasting your time.
