Showerthought: Dubbed vs Subbed debate at my anime club got WAY out of hand

Last month at the local meetup in Portland, someone said dubs are 'fake anime' and a guy literally walked out. I tried to calm things down by saying both have their place, but people got even louder. Now the club is split into two groups that refuse to sit together. Has anyone else had a simple opinion turn into a full blown argument like this?

Spent $80 on a limited edition anime blu-ray box set and got a bootleg instead

I saw this deal on eBay for a complete set of Cowboy Bebop on blu-ray for $80. It was supposedly the UK limited edition with all the extras. I jumped on it because I thought I was saving like $40 from retail. When it showed up, the discs had no logos printed on them and the menu screens were just static images. I checked the serial numbers and they didn't match any official release. So now I'm out $80 and stuck with a crummy copy. Has anyone else gotten burned by a fake anime box set on eBay?

Hot take: Should dub watchers get called out at conventions or left alone?

I was at Anime Expo 2023 in LA last July, and this guy started lecturing a girl near the merch booth about how she was 'wrong' for watching the dub of Attack on Titan. She looked super uncomfortable, you know? I stepped in and told him to back off, but then a few people around us actually sided with him saying she needed to 'experience it correctly.' Now I'm wondering if calling out dub vs sub preferences is ever okay or if con culture is just getting too gatekeepy. Has anyone else seen this kind of thing go down and how did you handle it?

Can we talk about the guy who tried to lecture me on subs vs dubs at a con?

I was at Anime Expo 2023 waiting in line for the Akira 4K screening. This dude behind me, maybe late 20s, kept going on to his friend about how anyone who watches dubs is basically ruining anime. I usually just ignore that stuff but he was loud and getting on my nerves. After about 5 minutes I turned around and said I actually prefer dubs for certain series like Cowboy Bebop and Yu Yu Hakusho because the voices fit better for me. He got real quiet, then went into a whole speech about lip flaps and cultural loss. His friend just stared at the ground the whole time. I told him I've been watching anime for 15 years and I know what I like, then turned back around. He didn't say another word for the rest of the 30 minute wait. Has anyone else had a stranger try to school you on your own taste at a con?

That time I spent 2 years watching dubs before a friend called me out

I was sitting in my buddy's basement last summer watching My Hero Academia with his crew. We got to a fight scene and I made a comment about the voice acting sounding off. He just stared at me and asked if I was watching the dub. I said yeah, that's normal right? He told me I was missing half the emotion and intensity the original actors put in. So I went home that night, switched to the sub on episode 1, and honestly felt like an idiot for not trying it sooner. Anyone else go through a long dub phase before switching?

Blew $80 on a Fullmetal Alchemist box set that turned out to be bootleg

I was so excited when I found a supposedly complete box set of Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood on a third party seller site for a deal. Tbh I didn't even check the reviews before buying because I thought it was too good to pass up. When it arrived last week, the discs had weird menus and the subtitles were off by like 3 seconds on every episode. Ngl I should have just saved up and bought from a legit store instead of trying to cut corners. Has anyone else gotten scammed by a fake anime box set?

Just realized binging seasonal anime is way better than weekly watching

I used to watch everything weekly. Followed about 8 shows per season. Felt like a chore keeping up. Last month I tried waiting for shows to finish. Watched 3 complete series in a weekend. Way more satisfying. No cliffhangers every 7 days. Plot points stick better. Anyone else drop weekly watching for binge marathons?

Warning: watching dubbed vs subbed One Piece changed my whole viewing pace

I spent 3 weeks watching the dubbed version of One Piece on Netflix, and I was only at episode 45. Switched to the subbed version with faster releases, and in the same time I got through 120 episodes. The voice actors in Japanese just had more energy for me, especially around the Arlong Park arc. Has anyone else found a huge speed difference between the two formats, or is it just me getting hooked on the subs?

Got roasted in a My Hero Academia forum for calling Bakugo a bad character

I made this post saying Bakugo's whole 'angry all the time' thing felt one-note to me after 30 episodes. Someone replied with like a 3 paragraph breakdown of his development through season 2 and 3. Honestly went back and watched those arcs again and yeah I was wrong. The guy even pointed out specific moments I missed like when he cries after the sports festival. Learned I need to actually finish shows before judging characters. Anyone else get humbled like that in an anime sub?

Which do you prefer for a first watch: dubs or subs?

I used to always watch anime with English dubs because it was easier to follow while cooking or chasing my kids around the house. But last winter I switched to subtitles for Attack on Titan season 2 and the voice acting felt way more intense in Japanese. Now I'm stuck wondering if I missed something by not starting with subs from episode 1. What side do you guys land on for a new series?

PSA: The animation quality dip from episode 4 to episode 5 in that new mecha show...

I binged the first 4 episodes of MechWarriors Reborn last night and the animation was gorgeous, like movie quality. Then I got to episode 5 today and it looked like a fan sub from 2006, with stiff movements and flat colors. I checked the credits and they switched studios between episodes, from Studio Bones to a smaller studio called DArt that's known for budget work. Has anyone else noticed this bait and switch with streaming shows lately?

The episode I misnamed for 6 months straight

I kept calling that one episode from Attack on Titan 'The Midnight Sun' because I heard someone say it at a con. Turned out the real title was 'Hero' and I had been mixing it up with a different show's episode for half a year. My friend corrected me while we were streaming it last weekend and I felt like a total goof. Has anyone else accidentally swapped episode names between anime and just rolled with it for way too long?

Can we stop pretending every anime with a tournament arc is automatically a 10/10?

I was scrolling through MyAnimeList last night and saw someone gave a show a 9 just because it had a tournament. The fights were badly animated, the characters were flat, and half the episodes were filler. It felt like they just checked a box. I've been watching anime for like 15 years now and tournaments can be great but they aren't a free pass to skip actual storytelling. Anyone else feel like people overhype stuff just because it fits a formula?

Picked streaming Crunchyroll over HiDive for the winter season and kind of regretting it

I had to decide between Crunchyroll and HiDive for this winter's new shows. I went with Crunchyroll because it's cheaper at $8 a month and has a bigger library. But I'm missing out on a couple shows that only HiDive picked up, like that one fantasy series everyone's talking about. The thing is, Crunchyroll's player keeps buffering on my laptop during peak hours, which is annoying. I also heard HiDive has better community features for discussions, which is what I'm really into. Has anyone else made the switch between these two and found one works better for keeping up with talks about episodes?

My 14 year old cousin told me I watch anime wrong. He said I skip the opening and ending songs every time. He said that's where the real feeling is. I thought about it and realized he's right. I miss all that buildup. Does anyone else watch the full credits every episode?

Question about paying $60 for anime streaming services each month

I added up my monthly subscriptions last week and was surprised to see I'm spending about $60 a month on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Netflix just for anime. That's over $700 a year for shows I sometimes don't even finish. I started thinking about whether it's really worth it when I could just buy the physical DVDs of my favorites instead. A box set of a complete series like Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood runs around $40 on sale and you own it forever. But then I miss out on new seasonal shows that everyone talks about online. Has anyone else dropped a service or gone back to buying discs to save money?

Overheard someone at a con arguing that One Piece filler is actually good, and it got me thinking

I was waiting in line for a panel at Anime Expo last weekend and heard two guys going back and forth about filler arcs. One of them said the G-8 arc in One Piece is better than most canon arcs because of how it handles the crew sneaking around. It made me realize that maybe filler isn't always bad, especially when it gives side characters more screen time. Has anyone else found a filler arc they actually enjoyed more than the main story?

Remember when anime forums had actual discussions?

I was scrolling through MyAnimeList the other day and realized I haven't had a real back-and-forth convo about a show in years. Back in 2012 on the old AnimeSuki boards, you'd get like 20 replies debating character motives, now it's mostly just upvote gifs and one-liners. Kinda makes me miss the days when someone would write a whole essay about why Lelouch was wrong in episode 22. Anyone else feel like the community shifted away from actual talking?

Fell for the hype and bought the $200 leather cover set

Got sucked into those Instagram ads for handmade leather notebooks. Spent $200 on a set with a cover and refills. The leather smells great but the paper bleeds through with any fountain pen. Super disappointed. Anybody else get burned by fancy stationery that doesn't actually work?

Sub or Dub for slice-of-life anime: which one loses the emotion?

Three years ago I watched 'Barakamon' dubbed first and felt the humor hit better, but last week I tried the subbed version and the vocal tones felt more real during the sad parts. Do subtitles give you a more authentic emotional connection to the characters, or does dubbing let you focus on the animation without reading?

Spent 4 hours trying to find an anime that was actually just a single episode OVA

I was scrolling through my watchlist last night trying to remember this show I saw a clip of like 3 years ago. Turned out it wasn't a full series at all, just a 45 minute OVA from 2007 called Kino's Journey. Took me way too long digging through MAL tags and old forum posts before my friend just messaged me the name. My Blu-ray player stopped reading discs halfway through episode 12 of Steins;Gate

I was watching Steins;Gate last night and my player just froze on a key scene. Tried cleaning the lens and even reset the firmware but it still won't load anything. Has anyone else had this happen and found a quick fix that actually works?

They pointed out I was cutting every 2 seconds and it made the pacing feel jumpy. I started leaving reactions at 5-8 second clips instead, and suddenly my discussion videos got way more comments. Has anyone else gotten feedback that made you totally shift your editing style?

TIL at the grocery store that anime pacing ruined my patience

I was standing in the checkout line at Kroger yesterday waiting 4 minutes for a price check and realized I've been trained by anime to expect every tiny delay to be a 3-episode arc. Is it just me or did shonen anime mess up our sense of real-world timing?
