Was reading an old maintenance manual from the 80s last night while waiting for parts and stumbled on that stat. I've been pulling wires on these birds for 5 years and never actually thought about the total length until I saw that number. Has anyone else run across a random fact from an old manual that just blew your mind?

Tried the old barber trick of using shaving cream on my clippers to clean them mid-cut

Had a guy with super thick curly hair yesterday in Denver and my clippers started bogging down after 3 minutes so I sprayed some barbicide foam on the blades while running them and it cleared out the gunk in like 10 seconds flat, anyone else use weird stuff to keep their clippers from dying on you?

Just realized a bag of dried beans goes way further than canned

I was talking to my neighbor Carol last week outside our apartments in Phoenix, and she told me she feeds her family of 4 for under 3 bucks a meal using dried beans instead of canned. She showed me how she soaks a whole pound overnight and slow cooks them with some onion and garlic. Now I'm wondering if anyone else has a favorite cheap bean recipe that isn't just chili or soup?

Got my color contrast ratio above 4.5 on my first try today

I've been redoing the color palette for my small business site and finally hit a 4.7 contrast on the main button text. It surprised me because I was sure the orange would fail but it passed after tweaking the background shade just a little. Anyone else find that small adjustments make a bigger difference than you'd expect?

Had to choose between ground turkey and chuck for tacos last night

I was at Aldi trying to save cash for a taco night and saw ground turkey was $3.50 a pound while chuck was $5. I grabbed the turkey since it was cheaper but the texture came out kind of dry and crumbly in the pan. Anyone have a trick to make lean ground turkey work better for tacos?

Hot take: The new library downtown has terrible contrast on their signage

I was at the Denver Public Library branch on Broadway yesterday and trying to read the room numbers near the stairwell. They've got this light gray text on a white door and I literally had to squint from 3 feet away. How does a brand new building get this wrong in 2025? Has anyone else noticed public places just ignoring basic accessibility?

That big anvil at the scrapyard looked great until I drove 45 minutes to check it

Saw an ad on Facebook Marketplace for a 150 pound anvil near Raleigh. Guy said it was a vintage Peter Wright in good shape. Drove out there on my lunch break and it was a cast iron chunk with a broken horn and a face that looked like someone tried to grind it flat with a 4 inch angle grinder. I walked away empty handed but wasted about $12 in gas and an hour. Anyone else had luck finding real anvils at estate sales or is it all just Chinesium now?

That moment when hostels started providing free breakfast... and it actually got good

I've been hostel hopping for about 7 years now. Used to be that free breakfast meant a sad banana and some stale bread. But in the last 2 years I've noticed a real shift. Places in Portugal and Spain started offering full spreads with eggs, fresh fruit, and even local pastries. I think the rise of remote workers pushed hostels to compete harder for longer stays. Has anyone else seen this upgrade at hostels in their area?

Tried using a hand trowel from Big Lots to save $30 and it left grooves like a damn plowed field

I figured hey, steel is steel right? Bought a $8 trowel from Big Lots for a small patio pour last Saturday. That thing flexed like a wet noodle and left these ugly ridges I had to grind down for two hours after it set. Learned my lesson: cheap tools cost more in time every single time. Any of you guys swear by a specific brand that wont break the bank but actually works?

Pro tip: I keep seeing folks in our shop skip the flux step on basic board-level soldering, and it's causing cold joints that fail after a month.

After reworking about 50 boards that came back with the same issue, I traced it back to that one skipped step, so what's your go-to flux brand for general repair work?
