Wasted $85 on a faulty espresso scale last month

Bought this fancy scale off Amazon that claimed 0.1g accuracy for pour overs. The thing was off by 2 grams on my second use, and the timer button stopped working after a week. Tried to get a refund but the seller ghosted me. Now I'm back to my old $15 kitchen scale that's been solid for 3 years. Anyone else get burned by cheap gear that's supposed to be "pro" quality?

My buddy swore by pre-wetting filters with cold water instead of hot

Honestly I thought it was dumb for like two years. He kept saying it keeps more of the oils in the cup and prevents that paper taste. I finally tried it last week on my V60 and I gotta admit he was right. The brew came out way smoother and I could actually taste the fruity notes from my Ethiopian beans. I used to grind fine and brew strong until someone called it "aggressive" at a cupping in Portland, and after adjusting my pour over to a 1:17 ratio with a coarser grind, the coffee actually tastes smoother and I'm not choking down bitterness anymore has anyone else gotten feedback that made you totally change your recipe?

My French press shattered this morning and I'm second-guessing the whole thing

I was making my usual 8am batch in my old Bodum and the glass just cracked when I poured the hot water in, sending coffee and glass everywhere across my kitchen counter. It happened so fast I didn't even drop it, the thermal shock got it right near the bottom. Anyone else switched to a stainless steel press or should I just buy a new glass carafe?

Grinder broke mid-pour and wrecked my whole morning routine

My Baratza Encore just died on me last Wednesday right as I was grinding beans for my 6 AM brew. The burr seized up and made this awful grinding noise then stopped completely. I tried taking it apart to fix it but a little plastic gear inside had sheared clean off. Now I'm stuck using pre-ground store coffee for the past 5 days and it tastes like bitter dirt. Has anyone else had this happen with the plastic gear models or should I just upgrade to the steel ones?

Overheard a barista say she uses tap water for pour-overs and it blew my mind

I was waiting for my order at a shop in Portland last week and this barista told a customer she actually prefers tap water over filtered for certain beans because of the mineral content. She claimed the local water here has a specific balance that brings out fruit notes in light roasts, around 50 ppm or something like that. I've been buying expensive bottled water for my V60 at home, so now I'm wondering if I'm wasting money. Has anyone else tried switching to tap water based on where you live?

Serious question, does anyone actually like the taste of light roast?

Three years ago in Seattle, I was at a cafe that only served light roast pour-overs. The barista, a guy with a serious mustache, told me I'd 'finally taste the real coffee.' I tried it and it was so sour it made my face hurt, like drinking hot lemon water. Last month, I gave it another shot at a new place in town, thinking maybe my taste changed. Nope.
