My neighbor said to stir my pour over 10 times and it made the worst cup I've had all year
My neighbor Dale, who has been roasting his own beans in a popcorn popper for 6 years, told me I had to stir the grounds exactly 10 times after the pour or the cup would taste flat. I tried it last Saturday with my usual Ethiopian beans from the shop on 5th Street and it came out bitter and muddy, way worse than just letting it sit. Turns out he was counting wrong the whole time and meant 3 gentle stirs, not 10 aggressive ones. Has anyone else gotten brew advice from a home roaster that backfired?
I had a similar thing happen with my dad's old camping method of stirring in circles for a full minute. Cup came out flat and chalky, just awful. What fixed it for me was going the other way, barely moving the grounds at all, just a quick little nudge to make sure everything gets wet, then leaving it alone. My grinder settings mattered way more than the stirring, if I'm being honest. Three gentle stirs sounds about right to me, your neighbor was probably just too rough with it.
