My bench went from scrapping 2 bodies a day to 6 after one $15 change, and I'm done being polite about it
Honestly, I used to think good lighting was for people doing watch repair, not camera guys like me, and I was wrong in a way that cost me real hours. Six months ago I was scraping through maybe two bodies a day on my bench in Sacramento, squinting at ribbon cables and dropping screws into the carpet because my single overhead bulb threw a shadow right where my hands worked. I added a cheap LED bar clamped to a shelf arm, about $15 at the hardware store, plus a little magnetic tray for the screws, and within a week my output on a typical CLA doubled. The bigger change was less obvious: I stopped skipping the tiny stuff, like checking the mirror box on a body I'd already buttoned up, because I could finally see it without leaning my head into the light. I'm not saying tools fix technique, but if you're fighting your own shadow all day, you're paying for it in rework. Anyone else here got a cheap bench change that gave them a bigger jump than an expensive tool ever did?
Man, a buddy of mine had the same thing happen with a clip-on light on his desk, said his rework basically vanished overnight. Funny how the cheap fix is usually the one you put off the longest.
