Struggled with tent stakes for years and then learned the 45-degree trick

I spent like 5 years pounding stakes straight down into the ground (you know, like a normal person) and wondering why my tent would shift in the wind. A random guy at a campsite in Moab last fall pointed out that stakes should go in at a 45-degree angle pointing toward the tent. Has anyone else had that moment where a simple angle change fixed everything?

Went to a rental house in Seattle and saw a bunch of cameras with cracked mirror boxes

I was at Glazer's in Seattle last week checking out a used body and the tech there showed me three different Canon 5D Mark IVs all with the same cracked mirror box problem. One side of me thinks this is just bad luck or heavy use, the other side thinks it's a design flaw Canon should've addressed. Has anyone else seen this pattern on the Mark IV specifically or am I reading too much into it?

The day I realized I was hoarding comics wrong for 15 years

I always bagged my silver age issues in regular mylar bags with standard backing boards. Thought that was the only way. Then last month at a shop in Portland, this kid behind the counter pointed out my 1967 Amazing Spider-Man #50 was starting to curl at the edges because the board wasn't acid-free. He showed me how the cheap boards literally ruin the paper over time. I must have 200 issues bagged wrong. Does anyone else use museum-grade boards for keys or just stick with whatever's cheapest?

Decided between a pour pad and an actual shed floor last spring

I was building a 10x12 shed in my backyard outside Akron and got stuck on whether to just pour a concrete pad or do a proper wood floor over gravel. Went with the concrete pad even though it cost me $850 more because my buddy said wood always rots in our wet springs. Three months in and no regrets the thing is solid as a rock and I can roll my mower right in. Has anyone else wrestled with this choice and ended up regretting one way or the other?

Question about using a torque wrench on oil drain plugs - is it really worth it?

I was working on a 2015 F-150 at my buddy's garage last Saturday and he INSISTS on torquing every single drain plug to spec, while I've always just done it by feel after 10 years in the business. He showed me three pans that cracked from overtightening and two that leaked from being too loose, which got me thinking. Do you guys actually break out the torque wrench for something as simple as an oil change, or am I just being lazy about it?

Finally tried auto-fit vs auto-fill in CSS Grid and auto-fill made my layout way less broken on those weird tablet sizes

I spent 3 hours debugging why my gallery was leaving huge gaps on an iPad mini and switching from grid-template-columns: repeat(auto-fit, ...) to auto-fill fixed it instantly because auto-fill keeps those empty columns in place, has anyone else run into this specific gotcha or is it just me?

That time a rat chewed through my harness in Phoenix and I didn't notice

I was doing a preflight on a Cessna 172 at a small field near Phoenix last summer when someone pointed out a nest under the cowling, and I laughed it off. Two days later, I found a chewed wire bundle that shorted the nav lights during a test run, and my lead said I should've checked for critters first. Has anyone else had a rodent stash something weird in their plane that caused a headache?

Lost a valve adjustment tool 60 feet down in Lake Michigan

I was working a salvage job off the coast of Milwaukee last month, swapping out an old intake valve on a water intake pipe. About 20 minutes into the job, my torque wrench slipped out of my hand and I watched it sink into the silt. Visibility was maybe 2 feet, so I spent the next hour feeling around blind in that freezing water. Had to call it quits and surface without finishing because I couldn't lock the valve down properly. The crew chief chewed me out for not having a lanyard on the tool, cost us an extra day and $400 to bring in a backup diver. Anyone else had a tool go missing in zero vis and just had to eat the cost?
