Subbed vs. Dubbed finally clicked for me...

I used to be a hardcore sub-only guy, thought dubs ruined everything. Then I watched Cowboy Bebop with the English cast at a friend's place in Portland... Steve Blum as Spike just hits different, man. The timing and emotion line up perfectly in a way I never noticed before. Anyone else have that one show that flipped your preference?

The first time I ever watched an anime in a language I didn't understand was at my cousin's place in Chicago. He was all about this weird mecha show called Eureka Seven, and he had it playing on a tiny CRT TV with these bootleg subs that were clearly translated by someone who didn't speak English that well. Like, the subtitles would say "I am going to the store" while the character was clearly having a breakdown. It was a mess, but somehow that chaos made me appreciate how much work goes into a proper dub or sub. Your Cowboy Bebop story reminds me of that, just with way better results.
