TIL the real reason sub vs dub debates get so heated
I was at a small anime meetup in Portland last Friday, maybe 12 people in a back room at a library. One guy started going on about how he ONLY watches subs because dubs ruin the voice acting. Someone else fired back about lip flaps and timing. I figured it was just taste, but then a translator who works on localization shows up late and explains that a lot of the anger comes from how changes in script can shift character personalities. He gave an example where a tsundere line in Japanese sounded playful but the English dub made her sound meaner. Has anyone else noticed that personality shift between versions, or is it just me noticing it more now?
