That "old guy at the dump" line makes me smile because I once had a guy at a flea market show me how to start a fire with a battery and some steel wool. Took me like 10 tries but now I can get a campfire going in under a minute.

That battery trick saved my bacon last summer when my lighter ran out of gas on a camping trip. It's one of those things you think won't work until you're desperate and suddenly it's the best skill you ever picked up. Those random lessons from strangers at flea markets and dumps are way more useful than anything I learned in a store.
