Thought air spading was a fancy way to waste money until I saw roots 3 feet down
A client in Sacramento kept bugging me to try air spading on her compacted clay yard and I honestly thought it was just a pricey way to blow dirt around. I finally gave in last Tuesday on a 40 foot red oak and watched the guy pull back soil in layers instead of chopping through it. About 3 feet down we hit roots the size of my wrist that the old root feeder never would have reached. It took 2 hours longer than my usual method but the holes stayed open and the soil came back loose instead of packed. My back also thanked me since I wasn't swinging a pickaxe in the heat. Now I'm wondering if I should rent one for the bigger jobs or just keep paying the guy. Anyone actually running one of these on a regular basis and is it worth the rental cost?
