My family has no clue what aircraft maintenance really entails.

My uncle works on the flight line at O'Hare. He says they find loose hardware all the time and it's almost never a critical part. The checks are important, but a single bolt rarely means the plane is unsafe to fly.

TIL a $120 borescope saved my bacon on a 'no-start' diagnosis

Yeah, a good multimeter is worth every penny. I keep a basic one in my toolbox just for checking grounds and continuity. It saves so much time chasing electrical gremlins.

Remembering an old guy in a St. Louis supply house who taught me about hand stitching

Was reading an article last week about how some high-end shops still train apprentices in hand stitching for repairs and tricky corners. It said the muscle memory from doing it by hand makes you better at judging tension even when you use a machine later. That totally lines up with what mark_fisher48 said about the feel and connection. Frank was right, your hand knows the nap in a way a tool just can't.

My magnet stick accident sent a hoof knife flying

My uncle in Phoenix had to get three stitches after his magnet grabbed a wrench off a ladder. I mean the whole point is to not bend over fifty times a day, right? A weaker magnet just means it falls off the stick when you don't want it to. Then you're back to bending over anyway. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather risk the surprise launch than have it fail every time.

A kid at the county fair made my whole month

Ever notice how the best truths come from kids just saying what they see?
