Warning: I stopped climbing with spikes on removals last year and my production went up
Everyone in my area swears you need spikes on every takedown, but last spring I started doing all my removals spurless after reading about it on a forum. First job was a 60 foot silver maple in a tight backyard, and yeah it was slower on the way up, but I wasn't nicking myself and my cuts were cleaner because I wasn't fighting my own footing. Six weeks in I realized I was finishing removals faster overall, mostly because I quit worrying about gaffing out on dead wood. Any of you tried going spurless on removals, or am I the only one around here doing it?
